VERNON DALE DICKEY

OSAGE, IOWA - Vernon Dale Dickey, 72, died Saturday, July 22, 2000, at the Hospice at Osage Memorial Hospital after a nine-year fight with cancer. His attitude and brave composure belied the seriousness of the disease during all of these years of treatment.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Christian Missionary and Alliance Church, 726 State St., Osage, with the Rev. Rick Magstadt officiating. Burial will be in the Osage Cemetery. Military rites at the grave will be conducted by the Osage American Legion Post No. 278. Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at Champion Funeral Home, Osage. There will be no relatives present. Any memorials may be addressed to the Osage Hospital Hospice or the American Cancer Society.

Vernon was born Dec. 18, 1927, to Richard Dickey and Vera Livens Dickey at rural Boscobel, Wis. He married Joan Fritz in 1951 in Wisconsin.

He served our country in the U. S. Army for two years during the Korean Conflict. He was a member of the Osage American Legion and the Osage V.F.W.

Vernon was a lineman for 37 years with Bell Telephone. He was an avid fisherman and hunter. He treasured his many hours of gardening, freely sharing his bounty. He worked several years for Mitchell County Conservation, mowing parks. He donated his time on weekends planting more than 100 trees in the parks.

Vernon leaves behind to join him in Heaven, his wife, Joan; his son, William Dale Dickey; his brother, Harold and his wife, Marilyn, of Ottumwa; his sister, Dorothy Dickey Thompson of Madison, Wis.; his brother, Don of Bagley, Wis.; his sister, Trudy Dickey Nechkash and her husband, Lavern, of Madison Wis.; and his sister, Linda Dickey Cutler and her husband, Stanley, of Linden, Wis.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant son, Lavern, on July 19, 1956; a brother-in-law, Paul Thompson; his sons, Robbin and Doug of Madison Wis.; and a sister-in-law, Karen Fritz Petrick of Fennimore, Wis.
