OBITUARY: Albert Elmer Petersen, 1899-1976

Funeral services for Albert E. Petersen, 77, who died December 26, 1976, were held on December 31st, at the First Lutheran church with the Rev. Stephen Engelstad officiating. Burial was in the First Lutheran Cemetery, St. Ansgar.

Albert Elmer Petersen, son of Henry C. and Caroline (Hansen) Petersen, was born January 16, 1899 near Hatton, N.D. He came to Cerro Gordo county with his parents when he was nine years old. He remained on the family farm near Clear Lake until his marriage to Edna Mae Hansen October 3, 1926.

They moved to Ventura where he was employed in a service station and also operated a butcher shop. In 1928 they moved to Carpenter where he owned a meat market and general store. He was appointed Postmaster in December, 1929, a position he held until September, 1939 when he transferred to rural route #1 out of St. Ansgar and his family moved to St. Ansgar at this time.

He was a member of the First Lutheran church and served on the Board of Trustees and was financial secretary for several years. He was also active in the Mitchell county rural letter carriers association, holding the post of secretary for nine years.

Mr. Petersen spent many hours at his favorite hobby, woodworking, rebuilding and refinishing old furniture. He has made numerous pieces of furniture, giving many to the members of his family.

Following his retirement from the Postal Service in 1966, after 37-1/2 years with the service, 27-1/2 years as a rural carrier out of St. Ansgar, he was able to spend more time with his woodworking, and with his wife made numerous trips visiting their children and grandchildren in Oregon.

Mr. Petersen was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and two sisters.

He is survived by his wife, Edna; five children, Mrs. Joe (Elaine) Lindaman of Charles City; Mrs. Lynn (Darlene) Jenkins of Roseburg, Ore.; Jane Petersen of St. Ansgar; Robert Petersen of Selma, Ore., and Mrs. Gary (Carol) McMaster of Waverly; eight grandchildren; six nephews and four nieces.
