Last Rites Saturday for
Mrs. Nellie Groth,
St. Ansgar Pioneer

Funeral services for Mrs. Nellie R. Groth, 85, who died at her home here in St. Ansgar Wednesday, May 25, 1955 after a long illness, were held Saturday, May 28, 1955 at the First Lutheran church with the Rev. O.A. Langehough officiating.

Nellie Regina Lane was born January 27, 1870, in Dodgeville, Wisconsin, the daughter of Hans K. and Mary L. Lane.

She was baptized by Rev. Juehl, pastor of the Dodgeville Lutheran church. In early 1871 members of the Lane family moved to St. Ansgar where they made their permanent home. Mrs. Groth was confirmed under the instruction of Rev. J. Olsen, former pastor of the First Lutheran church here.

She secured her education in the public rural and St. Ansgar schools and also the Seminary here. At the age of 18 she began her teaching career. Mrs. Groth taught for a number of years in the Mitchell and Wright county schools.

On June 4, 1890 she was united in marriage to Halsten A. Groth at the Lane farm south of St. Ansgar with Rev J. Olsen performing the ceremony. They made their home on a farm northeast of St. Ansgar until 1920 when they moved to St. Ansgar to the home which Mrs. Groth occupied at the time of her death. Her husband died March 5, 1947. Survivors include her daughter, Cora (Mrs. Ingwald Wahl) of St. Ansgar, and a son, Dr. A. Holland Groth of Columbia, Missouri; also two grandchildren, Dr. Aaron H. Groth Jr., of Ames and Marjorie (Mrs. Henry Clay) of Auburn, Alabama; also four great-grandchildren, Holland and Kathryn Groth, Ann and William Clay; two brothers, J. Lewis Lane and Carl O. Lane, a sister, Miss Emma L. Lane, and many other relatives.

Mrs. Groth was very fond of her neighbors. She loved people and cultivated the friendship of both young and old. She took an active interest in various organizations working for the public welfare. She was one of the honored members of the First Lutheran Ladies' Aid, a member of the Naomi Circle and a charter member of the American Legion Auxiliary. She was also an active worker in the Woman's Club.

Her church was an important part of her life. As long as her health permitted she was a regular attendant at services of the First Luthern church.

Her Bible was a highly prized and much read Book always within her reach. The Bible was a real source of strength and comfort to her in the hours when she was alone.

Burial was in the First Lutheran cemetery with Rev. Langehough in charge of the committal service.
