Tony Jerry Kurina 1920-2010
Tony Jerry Kurina, age 89, of Austin, Minnesota, died at Comforcare Good Samaritan Center Thursday afternoon, March 25, 2010.
Tony was born on December 1, 1920 to Anton and Anna (Miller) Kurina in Osage, Iowa, where he grew up and graduated from high school. Moving to Austin, he went to work for Geo. A. Hormel & Company in 1938. In June of 1942, Tony entered the Army. He came home on leave and married Dolores Rysavy on December 23, 1942 in Austin. He returned to complete his military service in World War II and earned the rank of Staff Sargeant before his honorable discharge in January, 1946.
Returning to Austin, he worked at Hormel Foods until his retirement from security in October 1983. Dolores passed away in 2008.
A lifelong member of the VFW, American Legion and the Eagles, Tony also volunteered countless hours at the Knights of Columbus. He was looking forward to going on the Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. on May 15 to see the World War II Memorial. He loved to watch old movies, travel and listen to country music. He sang in a men’s group in Osage, Iowa.
Survivors include his daughter-in-law: Barbara Kurina of Tampa, Florida; two grandsons, Daniel (Mary) Kurina, Tampa, Florida, and Thomas (Erika) Kurina, Brandon, Florida; three great-grandchildren: Cyle, Cody and Bryce; a sister-in-law, Mary Lou Rysavy, Austin, Minnesota.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Dolores in 2008; his son, Jerry in 2002; one sister, Rose.
A Memorial Service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, March 30, 2010 at Worlein Funeral Home with Father Joe Fogal officiating. Friends may call one hour prior to the service. Military rites by American Legion Post 91 and VFW Post 1216. Interment is at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis at 11:30 a.m., Wednesday, March 31, 2010.
