Funeral services for John Salz, Sr., 91 who died late Thursday afternoon at his home following a few months' illness, was held at Visitation Church in Stacyville on Monday, May 3 at 9:30 a.m. Fr. Purtell, a grandson, officiated at the solemn Requiem Mass with Rev. C.J. Ruhland acting as deacon and Rev. Victor Hintgen as sub-deacon. The Rev. Lubadel, S.V.D., was master of ceremony. Rev. Fr. Victor Hintgen preached the sermon

Pall-bearers were members of St. Joseph Society: Anton Wagner, Jacob Simon, Ernie Halbach, John N. Hermann, John E. Brumm, John Brown. Relatives and friends came here from Cedar Rapids, Dubuque, Whittemore, Osage, New Haven, New Hampton, St. Paul, Minn., Sublette, Ill., Mendota, Ill., Magnolia, Ill., Lostant, Ill., Streator, Ill., and Chicago.

A pioneeer resident of Stacyville, Mr. John Salz, Sr., was born at Leonore, Ill., on October 30, 1862 where he grew to manhood. He was married to Elizabeth Roth in September 1885 at Leonore, Ill., where they farmed until 1907 when they moved to Iowa and settled on a farm near Stacyville, where he lived until his death on April 29, 1954.

To this union were born 12 children, all of whom survive: Lizzie, Mrs. Martin Wolf; John, Katie, Mrs. Isidore Weber, Osage; William, Lostant, Ill.; sister Mary Bernadine, Anna, Cedar Rapids; Christine, Oelwein, Iowa; Mary, Mrs. Anton Derner, St. Peter, Minn.; Agnes, Mrs. W.T. Hynes, and Rose, Mrs. Delphin Brumm, New Hampton; Lena, Mrs. John Purtell, Peter and Tillie, Stacyville. Also surviving are 63 grandchildren and 96 great grandchildren. His wife preceded him in 1941.

He was a lifelong member of the Catholic Church and a member of the Holy Name Society and St. Joseph's Society. He was the last member of a family of 13 children. He was a devoted father, husband and kind neighbor and ended 92 years of righteous living.

Interment was in the church cemetary beside his wife. The rosary was sung Saturday and Sunday at the Hatten funeral home.
