REAL REUNION—Together for the first time in 45 year, are a sister and her three brothers, Rose Peterson, Alba Potter, Avery Stuckey and Russell Nicholson. Separated after the death of their mother, they learned just this summer that they were brothers and sisters

SISTER, BROTHERS TOGETHER AFTER A LIFE-TIME SEPARATION

Riceville – Search for a birth certificate and the grave of a mother who died in childbirth 45 years ago has brought about the reunion of three brothers and a sister.

Mrs. Celar (Alta Buttolph) Potter died on a farm near Riceville May 8, 1916, following the birth of her fourth child, Rose. Her mother cared for the four children for a while but finally the father was forced to place the children in foster homes.

Potter’s Sister, Mrs. Olive Nicholson, Kansas City, adopted Elmer, the oldest boy. He was renamed Russell Nicholson and didn’t learn until he was grown that he was not the Nicholson’s own son.

Mrs. Genevieve Stuckey, a cousin of Potter, took Rose and Avery, the second son. Alba, 2 at the time of his mothers death, stayed with grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Buttolph. He was married and has continued to live in Riceville. Rose is now Mrs. Rose Peterson.

Avery had taken the name of his foster parents, Stuckey. He and Rose were reared together. He has lived in the Riceville-McIntire area many years without realizing that he and Alba Potter were brothers. There is little resemblance in the two. But Russell Nicholson (Elmer) and Alba Potter look like twins.

Russell Nicholson (Elmer Potter) is employed as a janitor in the City National Bank, Kansas City. He is married and has two sons. When he wanted to get his birth certificate this year his foster mother sent him to Mrs. Stuckey, now 91, at Osage. She arranged for the four to meet.

Mrs. Peterson joined her three brothers at the home of her foster mother, Mrs. Stuckey, in Osage. Plans have been made for another reunion when Russell will bring his family from Kansas City in August.

They have found the grave of their mother in a little cemetery near the land their father owned. Russell remembered an artesian well on the place during his early childhood. They contacted the present owner of the land, Harold Clause, Riceville, and his son, Clarence who lives on the farm. A search of the fields revealed the artesian well still there.
