GROTH, Andrew 1868-1946

Local business places were closed this afternoon from two to three o'clock out of respect for a former business associate, Andrew A. Groth, whose funeral services were conducted at the First Lutheran church during that hour. Services were held at the Groth home at 1:45 p.m. The Rev. O. A. Langehough was in charge with burial at First Lutheran cemetery.

Andrew A. Groth, son of Assor and Kjirsti Groth, was born September 29, 1868, on the Groth homestead north of St. Ansgar. He was baptized November 8, 1868 and confirmed October 7, 1883 by the Rev. Johan Olsen. He received his early education at the Clyde school north of St. Ansgar and later attended the St. Ansgar Seminary and Dubuque Business College.

In 1898 he purchased a meat market in partnership with his brother, T.A. Groth. The Groth Bros. partnership sold this business after about two years and bought a grocery store, which they operated until 1922. The firm was well and favorably known and enjoyed wide patronage, not only in St. Ansgr but also in surrounding territory.

Mr. Groth was a modest man of the highest integrity and his business record was one of honesty and consideration for others.

On March 15, 1905, he was married to Inga M. Eidahl. The marriage was blessed with two sons, Alton O. and Irling A. both now residing in Des Moines, Iowa.

Mr. Groth was a lifelong member of First Lutheran church and throughout the years served his church faithfully in many capacities, including that of church treasurer for several years. During his business career, he was active in community affairs.

His health showed first signs of failing in 1931 but through the long years of illness he was always patient and uncomplaining. During this extended period his faith in God helped sustain him. His final illness lasted about ten days and he passed away peacefully in his sleep, Monday morning, March 18, 1946.

Mr. Groth will be missed greatly by his wife, his two sons and their wives and his four grandchildren, Barbara, Carole, Philip and David; also by his three brothers and one sister, H.A. Groth, T.A. Groth, Anton C. Groth and Mrs. Nilla Tollefson, and many other relatives and friends. A sister, Mrs. Helene Houg, preceded him in death in 1944 and a brother, Jacob, in 1925.
