Maggie McCarthy, ???? - 1896
"Death loves a shining mark," was never more forcibly illustrated than in the death of Miss Maggie McCarthy, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James McCarthy, of New Haven.
Deep sorrow pervades the desolate home, for the young lady was so winning in her ways, so pure and good, that she had a place in the affections of her parents, brothers, sisters and friends that nothing else can fill.
She died of heart disease after a illness of only a few days, at the home of her uncle, Dan McCarthy, at Clifford, North Dakota, where she had been visiting. Her remains were brought to Riceville Thursday morning and she was buried Friday morning, at the New Haven Cemetery.
A requiem high mass was celebrated, by Rev. Father Barry, after which he preached a sermon in which he spoke very kindly of the deceased, and words of courage and comfort to the sorrowing relatives and friends.
The high esteem in which she was held by all who knew her, was shown by the large concourse of friends who assembled at her home Friday morning, to follow her to her last resting place.
The Young Ladies Sodality of Osage, of which she was a member, attended the funeral in a body. The floral offerings of the Sodality and other others were very beautiful. Miss Maggie was just entering her nineteenth year, and when she and all of us at that age have so many bright hopes for the future.
