Emilia Nelson Maakestad, 1875-1947

Funeral services for Mrs. Martin Maakestad, 71, were held Monday afternoon, April 7, 1947 at the Rock Creek Lutheran Church. The Rev. S.O. Sorlien, church pastor, officiated and burial was made in the Rock Creek cemetery.

Mrs. Maakestad died last Thursday, April 4, 1947 at her home after a week's illness. She had been in failing health for some time.

Emelia Nelson, daughter of Nels and Inga Olsen Syse Nelson, was born June 24, 1875, in Rudd Township, Floyd County, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed in the Rock Creek Lutheran Church and was a life long member of that congregation.

On June 6, 1894 she was united in marriage with Martin H. Maakestad. The couple lived on the home place for a few years and then moved to their present home, formerly the Eliason place.

Six children were born to the Maakestads: Esther Sorose of Austin, Minnesota, John, Edwin, Leonard, Gladys Klemesrud, and Nora Klemesrud of the Rock Creek community.

In 1944 the Maakestads celebrated their golden wedding anniversary. Mrs. Maakestad had always been interested in the work of the church and did what she could as a member of the Ladies' Aid and her church Circle until her health failed.

Besides her husband and six children, seventeen grandchildren and one great-grandchild survive her. A sister, Mrs. Peter (Tina) Naig of Osage, a brother, Oscar Nelson and a number of nieces and nephews also survive.
