Gabriel O. Lunde, 1853-1933

Gabriel O. Lunde was born at Bjerkehagen, Gausdal, Gulbrandsdalen, Norway, on June 3, 1853. In 1865 he came with his mother (his father died when he was but a child) to America and located at Scandinavia, Waupaca County, Wisconsin. In 1866 he and his mother moved to Hayward, Minnesota, and in the spring of 1868 he came to Iowa and settled on a farm in Cedar Township, Mitchell County, where the Rock Creek Creamery now stands.

He continued to live in Cedar Township until 1897 when he moved to Nora Springs, Iowa, where for a short time he operated a general store.

In June 1897 he disposed of his store and bought a farm three and one-half miles north of Nora Springs, Floyd County, Iowa, where he continued to live until the time of his death.

In 1880 he was united in marriage to Anna Christine Heggerusta. To this union five children were born, three of whom survive: Gustav, of Cedar Township, Mitchell County; and Melvin and Russell of Rock Grove Township, Floyd county. He also leaves seven grandchildren. His wife preceded him in death, on November 28, 1916.

He was baptized in the Lutheran Church of Norway and confirmed by Rev. C.L. Clausen at the St. Ansgar Lutheran church.

Mr. Lunde, in coming to Mitchell County, united with the Rock Creek Lutheran church and continued as an active member until the time of his death.

He has been in failing health for several years, and in the early part of November became seriously ill. In spite of the medical and kind care of his children, the summons to depart came February 7, 1933. At the time of his death he was 79 years, 8 months, and 4 days old. The cause of his death, besides the usual infirmities of old age, was heart failure.

Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. O.C. Myhre at the home at 12 o’clock, and at the Rock Creek Lutheran church at 1:30 p.m. on February 11th.

Interment was made in the Rock Creek cemetery.
