Martha Logemann [1901-1992]

Funeral services for Martha Logemann, 89, formerly of Northwood, who died Wednesday, October 2 at the Good Samaritan Center here in St. Ansgar, were held Monday, October 7 at Deer Creek Valley Lutheran Church, Northwood, with the Rev. Kevin Olson officiating.

Martha Logemann was born November 15, 1901 in Ulvik, Hardanger, Norway, to Lars and Carrie Pederson Aurdal. She was baptized into the Lutheran faith in Norway.

In 1902 at the young age of six months she and her parents sailed for America. Landing in New York City, they then set out for Northwood where they lived for one year. At the age of one and a half the family made their final move to Deer Creek Township, Worth County.

She attended Sunday School and was confirmed in the Deer Creek Valley Lutheran Church, rural Northwood by Rev. David Toeve May 28, 1916.

After attending the eight grades of Deer Screen School No. 3, she attended Northwood High School where she graduated in 1920. After graduation she attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls. Upon completion of her college education she began her teaching career that extended eleven years. She was the last teacher in the old Deer Creek Schoolhouse, and the first teacher in the new Deer Creek No. 3. She enjoyed the challenge of preparing her students for the state exams they were required to take before entering high school.

In May 1924, as leader, she helped found and organize the Deer Creek Wohelo Girl's 4-H Club which was the first club in the county and remains ever strong today.

March 14, 1931, Martha was united in marriage to J. Barney Logemann at the Silver Lake Lutheran Parsonage, Worth County, by Rev. Hans Fosness. They lived their entire life in Deer Creek Township minus the nearly six years she lived at the Good Samaritan Center in St. Ansgar.

Martha was always a willing and participating member of her church and community. Her activities included her favorites, Circle and Ladies Aid and the offices she held. As A.L.C. district treasurer, she attended the National ALCW Convention in Dallas as a delegate. She was a long time and respected Sunday School teacher for over 30 years and was a lifelong Republican worker and Iowa Farm Bureau member.

Martha was preceded in death by her parents in 1952 and 1953, her husband in 1978, one foster brother, Bill Aurdal.

She is survived by her daughters, Bernice and husband Bud Weiland, Storm Lake; Marilyn and husband Harold Ringleb of Waverly; a son, Kenneth and wife Becky; three grandchildren, Rhonda Brackey, Joice, Renae and husband Tim Johnson of Carpenter, Brian and wife Kris Weiland, Des Moines; two great grandchildren, Kayla Lynn and Kally Kathleen Johnson; two nieces and a nephew.
