DEATH CLAIMS
HENRY LEWIS

CAME TO MITCHELL COUNTY
IN YEAR 1855

Henry Lewis, Mitchell county pioneer, died last Friday, July 24, at the home of Mrs. L. A. Squire, where he had been living for several years. He had been ill only a few days. He was 84 years, 5 months and 22 days of age.

Services were conducted from the Champion funeral home of Sunday, the Rev. F. W. Miller of the Universalist church being in charge. Interment was in the Osage cemetery.

Henry Lewis was born at Elizabethtown, Illinois, on Feb. 2, 1847. In 1855, he, with his parents, two brothers and two sisters, moved to Mitchell county, which for more that seventy-six years was his home. He grew to manhood on the home farm, three miles southeast of Osage, helping with the clearing of land for tillage and pioneering in the great undertaking which has made Mitchell county the garden spot of Iowa.

In 1872 he was united in marriage to Sarah Lucretia Bartlett, and to this union were born four children; Claude, who died in infancy, Henry C. Lewis of Osage, and Ralph R and Beryl Lewis of Williamsburg, Iowa.

Mr Lewis was the oldest of twelve children, eleven of whom grew to manhood and womanhood. Of this eleven, Silas, Sidney and George have passed away, and he is survived by four brothers, Seth of Waterloo, Wellington and Charles of Osage, and John R. of Steele, N. D., and by three sisters, Mrs. Sarah Hart and Miss Mary Lewis of Osage, and Mrs. Leith Peck of Harrisonville, Mo.
