Richard R. May, 90, passed away on his birthday at the Bon Secours DePaul Medical Center. Richard was born Oct. 28, 1917 in Mitchell County, Iowa, the son of the late Jesse May and Ina Donner.

Richard was predeceased by his parents; his wife of 58 years, June May; and a brother, Lloyd May.

Richard is survived by his daughters and son-in-law, Susan Mauldin and Scott of Norfolk and Mary Jo Lund of Norfolk; and his grandchildren, Melissa and Mike Diaz, Shelley Martino and Katherine Lund, all of Norfolk.

Richard was an avid golfer, achieving numerous holes-in-one and was a member and past treasurer of the Tidewater Flyers Golf Association. He served his country proudly as a member of the U.S. Navy, retiring with 21 years of service as a chief radioman. He served in the Asiatic and Pacific Campaigns, earned numerous medals including three Bronze Stars and completed his service with the government at the Naval Air Station, Rework Facility.

A graveside service with full military honors to celebrate Richard's life will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the Avenue of Flags section of Woodlawn Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Clifton Whitlock officiating. Online condolences may be signed at www.woodlawngroup.com .
