CAR ACCIDENT NEWS STORY

ST. ANSGAR, IOWA - The funeral for a young couple killed early Sunday morning in a one car accident one -- half mile west of here -- was set for Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Osage.

The pair, Russell Hutzell, 22, and his wife Donna Kay, 19, of Osage, were traveling east toward home on state Highway 105 at 12:15 a. m. when the small foreign car Hutzell was driving apparently went out of control.

It was raining at the time, and a St. Ansgar doctor called to the scene said the straight stretch of blacktop highway was slippery.

The vehicle went into the deep ditch on the opposite Heft) side of the road, hit an embankment, and rolled over once, ending on its wheels, Iowa highway patrolman Leland Sellers of Osage reported.

Both occupants (there were no others in the car) were thrown out, probably through the door as the vehicle flipped, the doctor told The Herald this morning.

Mrs. Hutzell, the mother of two children, 5 and 2½, was killed almost instantly, apparently of a broken neck, he said. Her husband died at 2:03 a. m. at Mitchell County Memorial Hospital, Osage, from multiple head injuries and a crushed chest.

The only known witness to the accident was an unidentified driver who was driving ahead of the Hutzells, and noticed the headlights on their vehicle suddenly go off the road and into the ditch.

He turned around and drove to the scene, then notifying the doctor.

Mitchell County Sheriff Merval (Duke) Angell told the Herald this morning there had not been any car accidents at that particulat spot in the six years he had been sheriff. The St. Ansgar doctor said the same for his 16 years there.

Survivors, besides their two children, Steven (5) and Russell Jr. (2½), include Mrs. Hutzell's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Earl Luther, St. Ansgar; her four brothers and two sisters, Larry, Dennis, Roger, Gary, Shirley and Betty Lou Luther, all at home, and her grandparents.

Hutzell, employed at Oliver Corp. in Charles City, also is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Donald Hutzell, St. Ansgar; three sisters, Mrs. Dean Gunsallus, Riceville, Mrs. Shirley Beyer, osage, and Barbara at home; five brothers, Donald Jr. and Curtis H. both of Mason City, and Richard, Ronald, and James at home; and his grandparents.
