OBITUARY: Clara Johnson, 1882-1964

Funeral services were held at the Champion Funeral Home Wednesday for Clara Johnson, 82, who died Saturday in Phoenix, Arizona. The Rev. Donald L. Berg, pastor of Rock Creek Lutheran church, was in charge of the services. Burial was in the Rock Creek cemetery.

Clara Johnson was born on February 1, 1882 in Cedar Township, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. L.H. Johnson. A schoolteacher from 1898 to 1947, she taught many years in country schools and later taught typing in Maywood, Illinois.

After her retirement from teaching, she lived for 16 years with her sister, Mrs. Olive Howe of rural Osage. Since then she has made her home with Mr. and Mrs. John Barr in Phoenix. Mrs. Barr is her niece. Miss Johnson had been in poor health and had been in hospitals and nursing homes since May.

Her parents, four sisters and one brother preceded her in death.

Survivors are one sister, Mrs. Howe of Osage and several nieces and nephews.

Clara Louise Johnson was born February 1, 1882 at Cedar, Mitchell, Iowa to Lars Helgesen Johnson and Ingeborg Andreas Tollefson, the third of their 4 daughters. She also had three half-siblings.

Clara never married, no children, she was a teacher.

Found in the 1885 -1900 censuses living at Cedar, Mitchell, Iowa:
1885: Lars Johnson 49, Bell Johnson 36, Nellie Johnson 15, Hannah Johnson 14, Oley Johnson 12, Ella Johnson 7, Estella Johnson 4, Clara Johnson 3.
1900: Lars H Johnson 65, Andrina I Johnson 51, Ole J Johnson 28, Helen B Johnson 22, Estelle C Johnson 20, Clara L Johnson 18, Olive A Johnson 11.
Found MAYBE in the 1910 census at Sheridan, Wyoming: renting a room: Clara L Johnson age 28.
Found in the 1930 census at Oak Park, Cook, Illinois: Teacher: Clara L Johnson age 48.

Clara Louise Johnson died October 24, 1964 at Phoenix, Maricopa, Arizona and was buried at the Rock Creek Lutheran Church Cemetery, Meroa, Cedar, Mitchell, Iowa.
