PIONEER WOMAN
OF OSAGE IS DEAD

Mrs. James J. Griswold Succumbs at
Long Beach to Heart Disease;
Funeral There Saturday.

Osage, Iowa — Funeral services were held Saturday at Long Beach, Cal., for one of Osage's earliest pioneer residents, Mrs. James J. Griswold, age 88 years. Mrs. Griswold died from heart disease June 7, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Charles Hunt, with whom she had resided 10 years.

Her maiden name was Ruth Valeria Arnold. She was born near Cleveland, Ohio, with the family coming to Osage in 1856. This place was her home until her removal to California ten years ago.

Her father, Joseph Arnold, was a retired sea captain who lived for some years at Port Huron on the St. Clair River, where he built tugboats for lake service.

After coming here he constructed buildings. A sample of his work is still to be seen on the Jack Eckford farm just northwest of Osage, better known as the Lo Brown place. It is the first big barn to be built here. In later years Mr. and Mrs. Griswold, who were ardent nature
lovers, spent their summers camping along the Cedar.

Her husband, a son, Bert, and a daughter, Gertrude, died some years ago.

A son, William W., Osage, and the daughter at Long Beach survive.
