A Saturday victim was Merle Baldner, 24, St. Ansgar, who was killed as he returned home after
renewing his drivers license at Mason City. Officers said Baldner's car was traveling at a high rate of speed when it slammed into a freight train at a crossing one mile east of Toeterville.[Ames Daily Tribune, Monday, September 30, 1963]

TOETERVILLE, IOWA — Prayer services for Merle Baldner, 23, who was killed in a car-train crash Saturday a mile east of Toeterville, will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Schroeder and Houg funeral home at St. Ansgar, followed by rites at 2 p.m. in St. Peter's Lutheran church at Toeterville; burial in the church cemetery.
