OBITUARY: Sheldon H. Dudley, 1828-1889
DEATH OF MR. DUDLEY
Sheldon H. Dudley was born at Addison, Vermont, December 5, 1828, and died at Osage, Iowa, March 23, 1889 His boyhood days were spent in his New England home and at the age of sixteen he went with his parents to the wilds of Wisconsin, then the frontier of the country. He knew the trials and hardships of pioneer life. He learned the trade of carpenter and worked at it many years.
On May 11, 1857, he was married to Maria Temple, at Beaver Dam, Wisconsin.
In 1865 he came to Mitchell County, Iowa, and settled on a farm near Osage, which he continued to till as long as his health permitted. Thirteen years ago he was stricken with paralysis and for the last twelve years he was comparatively helpless. Nine years ago he removed to Osage, where he resided till his death. For years he was not able to do more than go up town on errands. During the past winter he was not seen upon our streets at all. He was in feeble health all the time and confined to his home. Recently he was taken worse and it was too evident that the end was near. On Sabbath evening he passed away peacefully and quietly without a struggle.
Mr. Dudley was a man of strictest integrity and uprightness. He ever tried to do the right as he saw the right. He was of a happy hopeful disposition and sought to look upon the bright side of life. He bore all his trials patiently and uncomplainingly. Through all his suffering he was watched over with loving and tender hands. He leaves a devoted wife and loving son to mourn his loss. The funeral service was held on Tuesday afternoon under the direction of Revs. Wilcox and Gist.
