Hansine Jensen was born October 22, 1846 at Lindelse, Langeland, Denmark. Died at St. Ansgar, Iowa, September 15, 1910.
She was baptized into the Lutheran church November 28, 1846; and confirmed September 29, 1860.
June 22, 1872 she arrived at St. Ansgar, Iowa, with Jorgen B. Carlsen, to whom she was married June 26, 1872. To this union four daughters were born, Margareth of Bailey, Iowa. Julie of Osage, Marie and Elise of St. Ansgar, all of whom were with her the last four days of her illness.
The diseased had felt poorly all summer and grew gradually worse, until September 5th, medical advice was sought, September 11th, the doctors in consultation declared an operation her only opportunity for recovery. Obstruction of the bowels was the cause of her illness and death. Monday forenoon she went calmly and eagerly onto the table. In the afternoon she appeared to be recovering nicely from the effects of the operation, her mind was clear and keen and only an occasional word on Wednesday gave any sign of wandering.
Tuesday evening she asked to have some Hymns read, when asked if she was tired listening, she replied, "O no we can't get too much of that." Wednesday evening she repeated with the reader.
She had been unable to retain any nourishment for a week and Thursday forenoon she lay in an exhausted doze which became more and more of a stupor, until at 10:47 p.m. without speaking or regaining consciousness she passed into the rest she longed for.
Her illness through out was marked with her consideration for others, her fortitude and uncomplaint.
The funeral was held at the U.N.L. church, Sunday afternoon at 2:20 and was very largely attended by relatives and friends. Rev. Urnes, of Osage, preached the sermon, as Rev. Waldeland was not at home. The remains were laid to rest in the St. Ansgar Cemetery.
