Helen Culbertson, age 88, of Little Cedar, Iowa died Tuesday, January 11, 2000 at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo. Helen was born on August 27, 1911, at Little Cedar, the daughter of August Sr. and Carrie (Severson) Hultman. She attended Little Cedar Schools and graduated from the high school, after which she attended Iowa State Teachers College of Cedar Falls and received her BA in Education from Upper Iowa University in Fayette. Helen was a teacher for 46 years in Little Cedar and Osage, also serving as a girls basketball coach while teaching at Little Cedar. Helen married Claude Culbertson on August 15, 1945, in Seattle, Washington. They made their home in Little Cedar for years as she enjoyed gardening and flowers. She always mowed her own lawn, and enjoyed all sports and fishing trips with her husband and other family members. Helen is buried at First Lutheran Cemetery, St. Ansgar.
She is survived by a sister Viola Peterson of Waterloo, nieces Gloria Mills and Sonia Bates, and two nephews, Russell McPhail and Lawrence Hultman.
Preceding her in death were her parents, husband, Claude, five brothers, three sisters, one niece and three nephews.

Helen graduated from Little Cedar High School in 1928. See the photographic spread on the Mitchell County IaGenWeb website regarding the class of 1928.
In 1937 to 1938 Helen taught school at Carpenter, Iowa. From 1938 to 1941 she taught school at Fredericksburg, Chickasaw county, Iowa,
and after that she taught at Swaledale, Iowa.In 1953 Mr. and Mrs. Claude Culbertson lived at Little Cedar.
