Of St. Ansgar Died

Funeral services were held last Thursday afternoon for a lifelong resident of Mitchell County, William F. Steinberg, 91, who died January 16, at the home of his son, Harold Steinberg at St. Ansgar.

The Reverend Elmer Jacobs church pastor, was in charge of the services at St. Johns Lutheran Church southwest of St. Ansgar. Arrangements were by Schroeder and Houg, and burial was in the St. Ansgar Cemetery.

Wilhelm Friederich Steinberg was born March 2, 1876, in Newburg Township, the son of Friedrich and Wilhelmina (Diesterbeck) Steinberg. He was baptized at st. Johns Lutheran by the Reverend J. L. Zeilinger, April 17, 1876. He was confirmed at the same church March 22, 1891, by the Reverend John L. Westenberger, and remained a member of the parish all of his life. He was educated in the rural school near his home and attended the St. Ansgar Seminary one year.

Maria Beier [or Beyer] and William Steinberg were married June 2, 1904, at St. Johns, by the Reverend John Becker. They established their home on a farm three miles southeast of St. Ansgar where they spent the entire 63 years of their married life.

Mr. Steinberg served as Newburg Township Assessor for 18 years; as secretary of the Newburg No. 6 school district for 30 years; as a township trustee and as a secretary of St. Johns Lutheran Church for many years.

Surviving Mr. Steinberg are his wife, Mary; two sons, Elmer and Harold of St. Ansgar; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one brother, Otto Steinberg of St. Ansgar, and many nieces and nephews.

Mr. Steinberg was preceded in death by his parents, one son, Lawrence; two sisters and four brothers.
