MEMORIAL SERVICES WILL BE HELD AT FIRST LUTHERAN CHURCH ON SUNDAY
Dr. M. E. Waldeland, 57, pastor of the first Lutheran Church here for 25 years, died at his home in Northfield, Minnesota late Saturday of a heart attack. Dr. Waldeland had served as head of the publicity and transportation bureau of the Norwegian Lutheran Church of America since leaving St. Ansgar in 1927.
The funeral services, conducted at Northfield, Tuesday afternoon, were attended by a number of persons from here. Memorial services will be conducted at the First Lutheran Church here next Sunday morning at ten o’clock, Dr. L. W. Boe, president of St. Olaf College, preaching the sermon.
After he was graduated from St. Olaf College at Northfield in 1897, Dr. Waldeland completed his seminary course at the United Lutheran Theological Seminary, St. Paul, in 1900. He served his first pastorate in the Lutheran Church at Fertile in 1902.
Dr. Waldeland held many official positions in state and national synodical organizations and contributed frequently to religious periodicals.
Surviving Dr. Waldeland are his widow and three sons, Dr. Conrad E. Waldeland, a member of the faculty of Luther College, Decorah; Olaf, of St. Paul, and Paul of Northfield.

Hansen, M.A. Houg, Mr. and Mrs. William A. Groth, H.K. Dahl, Arnold Wold, Luther Tollefson, Clifford Tollefson, Albert Halvorson and John Albert Halvorson.

#2:Reverend Martin E. Waldeland
Reverend Martin E. Waldeland, the third pastor of this congregation, was born in Gunder, Iowa, September 18, 1876. He was the son of Ole Waldeland of the pioneer ministers of the Norwegian Lutheran Church. Reverend Waldeland received his early education in the public schools of Gunder, Iowa and Blair, Wisconsin. He was a graduate of St. Olaf College at Northfield , Minnesota and pursued an economic course at the State University of Minnesota. He had long since determined to devote his life to the work of the ministry and after leaving the University, he entered the Theological Seminary of the United Church from which he graduated. He was a pastor at Fertile, Iowa, from 1900 until 1902 when he accepted a call from the St. Ansgar congregation. Here he was pastor until 1927.
For some years he was Secretary of the North Iowa and Southern Minnesota Central Luther League and later became it’s president. In 1914 he was elected President of the International Young People’s League. He was the President’s representative in charge of railroad transportation bureau of the Norwegian Evangelical Lutheran Church, and later, moving to Northfield, Minnesota, was publicity director of the church.
In 1900 Reverend Waldeland was united in marriage to Miss Laura Eggen of Lyle, Minnesota, a daughter of Reverend J.M. Eggen, a prominent minister of the gospel. Mrs. Waldeland was a graduate of St. Olaf College. She was his most capable assistant during his absence from the parish when on Synodical missions. She was the inspiration of all who knew her and worked with her and she generously used her talents in music, writing, and organizational work. She organized and directed the Junior choir which at carious times sang before large audiences.
Reverend and Mrs. Waldeland had three children, Conrad, Paul and Olaf. Reverend Waldeland died very suddenly on December 30, 1933 and is laid to rest in Oaklawn Cemetery in Northfield, Minnesota.
Mrs. Waldeland died in May 1961 and is buried in Oaklawn Cemetery at Northfield, Minnesota.
