ST. ANSGAR, IOWA - O. Evelyn Gordon, 89, of St. Ansgar, died Wednesday (July 3, 2002) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday at Deer Creek Lutheran Church in Carpenter with the Rev. Kathy Larson officiating. Burial will be in Deer Creek Cemetery in Carpenter.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday at Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home in St. Ansgar.

O. Evelyn Gordon, 89, of Carpenter, Iowa, died Wednesday, July 3, 2002, at the Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

She was born Feb. 28, 1913, in Montpelier, N.D., to Bendick and Hilda (Erickson) Holstad. She was baptized April 27, 1913, at Montpelier Lutheran Church and confirmed at Shell Rock Lutheran Church, Northwood, Iowa. She graduated from Northwood High School in 1932 and taught in Hartland and Grove Township rural schools for five years.

On June 13, 1937, she married Roy Gordon at Deer Creek Lutheran Church, Carpenter, Iowa. Evelyn was active in Deer Creek Lutheran Church for 65 years, a member of all the womens church groups, sang in the church choir and small groups, taught Sunday School and Bible School, held offices in womens' circle and aid, and was financial secretary.

She worked for 20 years at the Carpenter Post Office, serving as postmaster for eight years. While raising her family, she was a substitute teacher in the Carpenter Consolidated School District.

She was a historian, card player, crossword puzzler, fisherwoman and traveler and enjoyed friends and family.

Survivors include sons, Robert and Sharon Gordon, Spirit Lake, Iowa; Bruce and Carol Gordon, Grundy Center, Iowa; daughters, Mrs. John (Ruth) Rollefson, Ann Arbor, Mich.; Mrs. Ken (Marjean) Hoeg, Prior Lake; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; brother, Aldon Holstad, Glenville; sisters, Mrs. Jewel (Lillian) Thompson, Northwood, Iowa; Mrs. Curtis (Luella) Leidal, Northwood, Iowa; Mrs. Leon (Burnette) Sanderson, Glenville; Mrs. Max (Mildred) Patterson, St. Ansgar, Iowa; Mrs. Stan (Idena) Hagen, Plymouth; sister-in-law, Dorothy Holstad, Austin.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy; parents; brothers, Marvin and Irving Holstad; sister, Gilma Holstad and Julia Stumo.

Service: Was 1 p.m., Saturday, July 6, 2002, at the Deer Creek Lutheran Church, Carpenter, Iowa, with the Rev. Kathy Larson officiating.

Interment: Deer Creek Cemetery.

CARPENTER, IOWA - O. Evelyn Gordon, 89, of Carpenter, died Wednesday (July 3, 2002) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Evelyn was born in Montpelier, N.D., on Feb. 28, 1913, the fourth daughter of Bendick and Hilda (Erickson) Holstad. She was baptized on April 27, 1913, at Montpelier Lutheran Church. At five years of age, she moved with her parents to a farm west of Northwood and was confirmed at Shell Rock Lutheran Church west of Northwood.

She graduated from Northwood High School in 1932 and went on to teach in the Hartland and Grove Township rural schools for five years.

Evelyn married Roy Gordon on June 13, 1937, at Deer Creek Lutheran Church in Carpenter. They had two sons and two daughters.

Evelyn was active in Deer Creek Lutheran Church for 65 years. She was a member of all the womens' church groups, sang in the church choir and small groups, taught Sunday School and Bible School for many years, held many offices in women's circles and aid, and was financial secretary of the church.

Roy and Evelyn lived in Carpenter their entire married life, except for a few years spent working the Gordon farm. She was employed by the United States government for 20 years at the Carpenter Post Office, serving as postmaster for eight years. While raising her family, she was a substitute teacher in the Carpenter Consolidated School District.

Evelyn was a lifetime learner, historian, card shark, crossword puzzler, fisherwoman and traveler. During her last years spent in St. Ansgar, she enjoyed her old and newfound friends at the St. Ansgar Senior Center. Her greatest passion was being surrounded by family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Roy; parents; two brothers, Marvin and Irving Holstad; and two sisters, Gilma Holstad and Julia Stumo.

Survivors include two sons, Robert and Sharon (Hanson) Gordon, of Spirit Lake, and Bruce and Carol (Severson) Gordon, Grundy Center; two daughters, Mrs. John (Ruth) Rollefson, of Ann Arbor, Mich., and Mrs. Ken (Marjean) Hoeg, of Prior Lake, Minn.; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; one brother, Aldon Holstad, of Glenville, Minn.; five sisters, Mrs. Jewel (Lillian) Thompson, of Northwood, Mrs. Curtis (Luella) Leidal, of Northwood, Mrs. Leon (Burnette) Sanderson, of Glenville, Mrs. Max (Mildred) Patterson, of St. Ansgar, and Mrs. Stan (Idena) Hagen, of Plymouth, Minn.; sister-in-law, Dorothy Holstad, of Austin, Minn.
