STACYVILLE, IOWA - Fred "Fritz" Halbach, age 90, of Stacyville, Iowa, died Thursday (Nov. 19, 2009) at the Stacyville Community Nursing Home in Stacyville.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 24, at Visitation Catholic Church in Stacyville. Burial will be in the Visitation Catholic Cemetery.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Visitation Catholic Church, where there will be a rosary at 5:30 p.m. and a scripture wake service at 7 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to The Parkinson's Institute, 1170 Morse Avenue, Sunnyvale, CA, 94089; Stacyville Community Nursing Home, 413 South Broad Street, Stacyville, IA, 50476; or in care of The Fred Halbach Family, 413 South Broad Street, Stacyville, IA, 50476.

Frederick John Halbach was born on March 27, 1919, near Stacyville, the son of Nicholas and Rose (Brumm) Halbach. He attended Visitation Grade School and graduated from Visitation High School.

On Nov. 26, 1942, Fred married Marcella Gerhartz in Meyer. They farmed east of Stacyville. Fred and Marcella retired and moved to Stacyville in 1980, and moved to the Stacyville Community Nursing Home in 2006. He was on the Board of Directors of the Stacyville Creamery and was a member/secretary of the Mitchell County Fair Board. He was also a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters and the Knights of Columbus. Fred volunteered in 4-H, church, and school activities. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, bowling, woodworking, gardening, and traveling.

Fred is survived by two daughters, Mary R. Clements of Hayward, California, Lynne A. Fairbanks of Marion, Illinois; a son, Nicholas W. Halbach of Hayward, California; a sister, Bertilla Mullenbach of Rochester, Minnesota; a sister-in-law, Louise Halbach of Osage; two brothers-in-law, Clem Gerhartz of Harpers Ferry, and Wilfred Gerhartz of Owatonna, Minnesota.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Marcella Halbach in 2007; sisters, Olive Hemann, Irene Kinney, and Margaret Stolzenberg; and brothers, Raymond, Wilfred, and Alois Halbach.
