Funeral services for Mrs. Julia Bakkum, 77, who died of uremic poisoning at Mitchell County Memorial hospital in Osage last Thursday morning, were held Saturday afternoon. The Rev. Luther Berven, pastor of Faith Lutheran church in Mitchell, was in charge of the services there. Burial was in the First Lutheran Cemetery.
Julia Pederson was born January 17, 1880, in Snertendalen, Norway, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Peder Pederson. At the age of 21, she was married to Gilbrand O. Bakkum. In 1905, the Bakkums emigrated to America, coming to Mason City, where he worked for Peder Pederson Sr. Later they lived in Meltonville, St. Ansgar and Mitchell. She had lived in Mitchell county for 50 years.
Mrs. Bakkum had served as janitor of the Mitchell church for 14 years, and with the assistance of her son, Clarence, had been caretaker of the Oak Grove cemetery in Mitchell for 10 years. She was brought to Memorial hospital March 24, after becoming seriously ill at her home.
Survivors include her children, Mrs. Olga Boe and Mrs. Edwin Griga of Mitchell; John of Riceville; and Clarence at home, nine grandchildren, and three great grandchildren, as well as several relatives in Norway.
She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, four sons and several brothers and sisters.
