OSAGE, IOWA - Eugene A. Groe, 56, of 1003 Chase St., Osage, died Friday (Jan. 18, 1991) at his law office in Osage, of natural causes.

Funeral services will be held 1:00 p.m. Monday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Osage, with the Rev. Joseph Nesheim and the Rev. Dennis Hanson officiating. Burial will be in Osage Cemetery where military rites will be conducted by the Osage American Legion Post 278.

Visitation will be after 1 p.m. today at Champion Funeral Home, Osage.

Survivors include his wife, Jan, Osage; two sons, Scott, Cedar Rapids, and Barry, Flint, Mich.; two sisters, Mrs Evelyn Fjelstad, Lake Mills, and Mrs Melbourne (Carmen) Butler, Northwood; and three brothers, Duane Groe and Arlen Groe, both of Albert Lea, Minn., and Gerald Groe, Austin, Minn.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one daughter, and four brothers, one in infancy.

VETERAN OSAGE
attorney dies

OSAGE, IOWA - Longtime Osage attorney Eugene A. Groe, 56, died Friday morning at his law office.

Groe had practiced law in Osage for more than 20 years. He had served as Mitchell County magistrate since 1973.

Groe is believed to have died of an acute coronary at 10:10 a.m. Friday, said Dr. William Spencer, Osage.

Mark Vanvoorhis, an Osage attorney, who often worked with Groe, said he knew him "to be a high-class lawyer and a reliable person. I respected his knowledge of the law" said Vanvoorhis.

When Groe first moved to Osage in the late 1960's he practiced law with Marie Shankland until her death, said Vanvoorhis. From then on, Groe was a solo practitioner.

Before moving to Osage, Groe practiced law in Coralville and worked in the trust department of a Sioux City bank, said Vern Kratchmer, an Osage attorney who has known Groe since the two attended law school together at the University of Iowa.

He was "an extremely competent and fair magistrate" said Bryan McKinley, assistant Mitchell County attorney. "He had the ability to listen to both sides and make good decisions."

Groe "loved to play golf and liked to go fishing," said Kratchmer. "He will be missed by a lot of people."

He belonged to Sunny Brae Golf Course at Osage and Cedar River Country Club, at Adams, Minn., said Merrill Kelley, a member of Groe's golf foursome that played weekly.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at Champion Funeral Home, Osage.
