Ernest Albert Asfahl

RICEVILLE, IOWA - Ernest Albert Asfahl, 85, of Independence, and formerly of Riceville, died Tuesday, June 6, 1995, at the Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo, following a long illness. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Free Methodist Church in Riceville, with the Rev. Herschel Hawf officiating. Burial will be in the Riverside Cemetery, Riceville.

Friends may call beginning at 3 p.m. Friday at the Reiff Funeral Home in Independence and from 10:30 a.m. Saturday until time of services at the Free Methodist Church, Riceville. A memorial service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Reiff Funeral Home, Independence.

Mr. Asfahl was born on Dec. 24, 1909 near Riceville, the son of Albert E. Asfahl and Alice L. (nee) Mosher Asfahl. He attended the country elementary schools near Riceville and graduated from the Riceville High School.

On June 14, 1939, he was united in marriage to Dorothy E. Nelson in Riceville, and the couple farmed in the Mitchell and Howard Counties near Riceville until his retirement in 1975. In 1985 the couple moved to the Independence, Iowa area. Ernest was an active member of the Free Methodist Church in Riceville, and he attended the Hope Wesleyan Church in Independence. He was a member of the Farm Bureau, and was a director of the Jamestown #8 country school near Riceville.

Surviving is his wife, Dorothy Asfahl of Independence; two children and their spouses, Raymond and Esther Asfahl of Riceville, and Dolores and Leonard Davis of Independence; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren; two brothers, Ralph Asfahl of Riceville and Donald Asfahl of Louisville, Ky.; and a sister, Margaret Bird of Osage.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Henry Asfahl and Roy Asfahl; and two sisters, Marie Schmidt and Marian Schmidt.
