The deceased was born in the Southwestern part of Norway, on the 7th day of December, 1796. He was the father of Mrs. Lars Moe, of this place, and grandfather of Martin Moe of this firm. In 1811, at the age of 15, he went to sea, and from that time until 1850 the largest part of his life was passed on the waters. In 1827 he was married; and in 1846 was by the death of his wife, left a widower. In 1850 he came to this country, settling in or near, Dodgeville, Iowa county, Wisconsin, where he continued to reside until 1869, when he removed in company with family of Lars Moe to St. Ansgar, where he has since lived until his death today. From the age of 13 to 81 -68 years-he has never known what sickness was, while his mental and bodily strength maintained unusual vigor up to a very few days preceding his death; and when the summons came to go his body was racked by no pains, but the breaking of life's brittle thread was like the gentle sleep of childhood or the passing of a summer's zephyr. An iron constitution and a life of moderation and temperance permitted him to reach an age to which very few ever attain, and close his life's chapter surrounded by the kindest and best of relatives and friends.
