Orvie Bennett Severson [1905-1980]

Funeral services for Orvie B. Severson, 74, of Carpenter, who died at the Mitchell County Memorial hospital April 7, were held April 10 at Deer Creek Lutheran Church, Carpenter, with the Rev. E.C. Franke officiating.

Orvie Bennett Severson, son of Andrew and Julia (Ellingson) Severson, was born September 14, 1905 on a farm in Barton township, Worth County. He was baptized November 30, 1905 by the Rev. M.E. Waldeland at Deer Creek Lutheran church. His sponsors were Mr. and Mrs. Ole Hanson, Ida Hanson and Cornelius Golberg. He was confirmed December 26, 1919 by the Rev. Waldeland. His formal education was received at Willow Grove Country school, and was graduated from Carpenter high school in 1925.

Mr. Severson married Agnes Feldt March 21, 1937 at the First Lutheran church in St. Ansgar with the Rev. Olaf A. Langehough officiating. They lived on the Severson homestead from the time of their marriage until 1974 when they retired. He enjoyed his retirement at his home in Carpenter.

In October of 1979 it was diagnosed that he had leukemia.

During his lifetime Mr. Severson was active in church and community affairs, serving as deacon for many years, chairman of the building committee for the Deer Creek Lutheran church, and in recent years was financial secretary for the church. He was also a board member of the Carpenter School District.

Mr. Severson was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Agnes of Carpenter; two daughters, Shirley Severson of Minneapolis and Carol Gordon of Grundy Center; one son, Dennis of Denver, Colo.; five grandchildren, Loren, Brian and John Gordon, and Melissa and Julia Severson; also three sisters, Bella Houghtaling of Mitchell, Laura Rustad of St. Ansgar and Alice Boston of Waterloo; 13 nieces, six nephews, cousins and friends.

Burial was in the First Lutheran cemetery, St. Ansgar, with Rev. Franke in charge of committal services.
