Last Rites Here Monday, March 9, For Herman A. Bartz

Funeral services for Herman A. Bartz, 86, a former businessman in St. Ansgar, who died in Oakland, California Sunday, March 1, 1959, will be held Monday, March 9 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church with the Reverend Carl T. Wuerffel officiating.

Herman Wilhelm August Bartz was born in Newburg Township September 15, 1870. He was baptized in the Rock Creek Church, Mitchell County by the Reverend Grier and confirmed March 29, 1885.

He resided on a farm with his parents until 1882 when he worked as a carpenter for three years. He attended Parker’s (Pen) College in Janesville, Wisconsin for one year and returned to resume his carpentry trade until 1896.

On January 21, 1896 he entered into the furniture and undertaking business in St. Ansgar. He married the former Minnie Moeller of Columbus, Wisconsin on September 2, 1896. Two sons were born to this union, Erwin O. and Walter.

He became a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church here and served as treasurer of the congregation for 22 years. He continued in business here until 1917 when he moved to Hutchingson, Minnesota in 1919 where he was in business for four years. Mr. Bartz and his family moved to Faribault, Minnesota in 1927 and was employed in a furniture factory there for five years. He continued work as a carpenter until the death of his wife in 1933. Shortly thereafter he moved to California to be near his sons. He retired in 1958.

He is survived by his two sons, Erwin of Los Angeles, California and Walter of Oakland, California; also a brother Emil of Southgate, California; two sisters, Mrs. Helen Roeke of Wausau, Wisconsin and Mrs. Ida Petznick of Grafton.
