Mabel H. Groth Funeral Held Here September 7

Funeral services for Mabel H. Groth, 81, who died at the St. Ansgar Good Samaritan Center Friday, September 4, were held Monday, September 7 at the Immanuel Lutheran church with the Rev. Norman E. Betke officiating.

Mabel Hougen Groth was born July 20, 1900 in McCallsburg, the daughter of John and Bertha (Ellingson) Hougen. She was baptized September 1900 at Bethany Lutheran church in McCallsburg by the Rev. J. N. Sandven. She was confirmed in June 1915 at Immanuel Lutheran church, Story City.

She attended Story City schools and graduated from the high school there in 1919, and was graduated from St. Olaf College, Northfield, Minn. in 1923. She also took graduate courses at the University of Iowa.

She was a teacher at Otranto high school, and during that time met and married August Groth April 24, 1930. She became a member of Immanuel Lutheran church here and also taught Sunday school. She and her husband were engaged in farming in the Otranto area until his death May 13, 1949.

Mrs. Groth resided in Ames, Story City and these past years in Mason City until she became a resident at the Good Samaritan Center here in 1979.

She is survived by one sister, Mrs. Esther Paulson of Ames; two brothers, Ernest Hougen of McCallsburg and Byron Hougen of Cedar Rapids; nieces, nephews and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and a sister, Lillian.

Burial was in the Immanuel Lutheran cemetery with Rev. Betke in charge of the committal service.
