Emma Comnick Houg Funeral Services

Funeral services for Mrs. Monrad A. Houg, 75, who died at the Mitchell County Memorial Hospital December 3, 1973, were held at First Lutheran Church here December 6 and at Trinity Lutheran Church in Westbrook, Minnesota December 7.

The Reverend Stephen Engelstad and the Reverend Delbert Ring of Twin Lakes, Minnesota officiated at the Westbrook service

Mrs. Emma Comnick Houg was born in Westbrook Township, Westbrook, Minnesota January 10, 1897. She was one of seven daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Christ Hansen, along with two foster daughters and two foster sons.

Emma Caroline was baptized and confirmed at Faith Lutheran Church in Westbrook. She was reared and educated in the Westbrook schools. She was also competent in speaking and reading the Danish language fluently at an early age.

On September 25, 1915 she was united in marriage to G. D. Comnick of rural Westbrook. Three children were born to them: one daughter, Mrs. Clifford (Evelyn) Gunderson of Rock Falls, Illinois; two sons, the Reverend Don Comnick of Milroy, Minnesota and the Reverend Russell Comnick of Indianola, who are pastors in the American Lutheran Church.

The Comnicks farmed for 40 years on the Comnick homestead until Mr. Comnick’s death in 1956. Later she moved to St. Ansgar where she was united in marriage to Monrad A. Houg October 8, 1970 at the First Lutheran Church.

Mrs. Houg is survived by her husband and three children; two sisters, Mrs. Hannah Bengsten and Mrs. Carl Gertner, both of Westbrook; one foster sister, Mrs. Anna Ross, Glendale, California; one foster brother, Luverne Beverson of Tomahawk, Wisconsin; three step children, Dr. Andy Houg of Seattle, Washington; Mrs. Richard Lenz of Hutchingson, Minnesota, and Mrs. D. Q. Storie of Fort Campbell, Kentucky; eight grandchildren, 10 step grandchildren; two great grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends.

Burial was in Westbrook Cemetery, Westbrook, Minnesota with the Reverend Don Comnick and the Reverend Russell Comnick in charge of committal services.
