Alice Birkedal
OSAGE, IOWA -- Alice Birkedal, 77, died Saturday (June 15, 1996) at her rural home.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Rock Creek Lutheran Church, rural Osage, with the Rev. Roger Hoppenworth Officiating. Burial will be in the Rock Creek Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 6:30 to 9 p.m. today at the Champion Funeral Home, and will continue one hour prior to services at the church.
Alice Birkedal was born Aug. 30, 1918, at Quasqueton, the daughter of Prentiss and Nina (Morton) Turner. Alice graduated from Independence High School in 1936 and Independence Junior College in 1939, continuing her education at Iowa State Teachers College, where she received her teacher's certificate. Alice taught in rural schools for four years, and one year in Colwell, before moving to Nora Springs in 1946.
She started the kindergarten program in Nora Springs and taught kindergarten for three years. Alice was united in marriage to Palmer Birkedal on Dec. 11, 1949, at Independence. They farmed in Mitchell County.
She was an active member of the Rock Creek Lutheran Church where she taught Sunday school and was a member of the Lydia and Mary circles.
She found great enjoyment in needlework and caring for plants and flowers. But her family was the center of her life. She took great delight in being a mother and a grandmother. She was a great example of faith for her family and friends.
Survivors include her husband, Palmer Birkedal of Osage; a daughter, Nina Bates and her husband, the Rev. John Bates, of rural Rudd; four sons, the Rev. Paul Birkedal and his wife, Karen, of Clermont, Mark Birkedal and his wife, Char, of Nora Springs, Philip Birkedal and his wife, Julie, of Mason City, and Dr. John Birkedal and his wife, Mary Lynn, of Winston-Salem, N.C.; and 12 grandchildren, Matthew and Allison Bates, Sarah, Rachel and Nathan Birkedal, Brian, Scott and Eric Birkedal, Clare and David Birkedal and Ashley and Shelby Birkedal.
