St. Ansgar Grocer Dies at Rochester

ST. ANSGAR, IOWA - Funeral services for Leland Larson, 53, operator of a food store at St. Ansgar since 1946, died Friday at a hospital at Rochester, Minnesota, from Hodgkin's disease.

Mr. Larson was born near Carpenter and was graduated from the Otranto High School. He was married to Mae Tollefson of St. Ansgar

Survivors include the widow, son James, a student at Luther College, Decorah, and three brothers, the Reverend Raymond Larson of Washington State, Delbert of Cresco and Alton of Spring Valley, Minnesota.

JAMES L. LARSON OF ST. ANSGAR, BROTHER OF D. A. LARSON, DIES

James L. Larson, 52, of Saint Ansgar, brother of D. A. Larson of Cresco, and former Cresco resident, died Friday following an illness of several months.

His illness was first noted July 23, 1953 and became increasingly more serious as the weeks passed. He had spent eight weeks in the hospitals at Osage and at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester. His illness was diagnosed as incurable.

Funeral services were held yesterday in the St. Ansgar First Lutheran Church, the Reverend Olaf A. Langehoush in charge. Burial was in the church cemetery.

James Leland Larson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Anton Larson, was born on a farm near Otranto, October 12, 1901. He was baptized and confirmed in the Deer Creek Lutheran Church by the Reverend M. E. Waldeland, and attended country school near Otranto. He was graduated from the Otranto High School.

Mr. Larson was married to Mae Tollefson April 18, 1931. The early part of Mr. and Mrs. Larson's marriage was spent on a farm north of St. Ansgar. In 1932, the Larson's moved to Independence where Leland was employed at the State Mental Hospital. Two years later in 1934, a son, James Leland was born.

The family moved to Cresco in 1942 where Mr. Larson operated the furniture business owned by his brother, D.A. Larson. After managing the business for three years he went into business for himself in St. Ansgar, purchasing the Andrew Ellingson Grocery. The Larson family then moved to St. Ansgar.

On moving to St. Ansgar, Mr. Larson became a member of the First Lutheran Church where he became an active worker. He served as assistant superintendent of the Sunday School for several years and served as president of the St. Ansgar circuit Lutheran Brotherhood for four years.

His civic activities included membership in the St. Ansgar Chamber of Commerce, the school board, city council, Lion's club and various other community groups.

Surviving Mr. Larson are his wife, Mae, his son, James, who is a sophomore at Luther College, Decorah four brothers, Delbert of Cresco, Alton of Ottawa, Illinois, Raymond of LaCrosse, Washington, and Allen of Spring Valley. Also surviving are a number of uncles, aunts and cousins.
