Two dead after car collision

STACYVILLE, IOWA — Two men were killed Tuesday evening when their cars collided near Stacyville after one apparently ran a stop sign. John Bierbrodt, 29, of Rose Creek, Minnesota, and John Freund, 40, of Mclntire, Iowa, were pronounced dead at the scene of the accident three miles northwest of Stacyville at 6 p.m. Tuesday. Both men were alone in their cars.

Mitchell County Sheriff Curt Younker said Bierbrodt was traveling north on a gravel road when he apparently ran a stop sign and drove in the path of Freund, who was traveling east.

Osage's Jaws of Life was summoned to remove Freund from his car. The Stacyville Fire Department and the St. Ansgar Rescue Squad also assisted.

The accident remains under investigation by the Mitchell County Sheriff's Department and Iowa State Patrol.
