Father of Eight Takes Own Life at St. Ansgar
ST. ANSGAR, IOWA — The body of Kenneth Horgen, age 37, the father of 8 children, was found in a field of his farm south of here. Mitchell County authorities determined the death to be a suicide.
A .22 caliber rifle was found alongside his body, which had a bullet hole in the head. Authorities said Horgen had been in ill health in recent months.
Funeral services have been set for Saturday at l:00 p.m., at the Immanuel Lutheran Church. The Rev. Carl Wuerffel will officiate. Burial will be in the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery, with Schroeder & Houg Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
In addition to his wife and children he is survived by two brothers, Virgil, St. Ansgar; and Glendon, Riceville; and by one sister, Mrs. Robert Frank. . . .

Funeral services for Kenneth Horgen, 39, who died at his farm home south of St. Ansgar Thursday, June 11, were held Saturday, June 13 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church with the Reverend Carl T. Wuerffel officiating.
Kenneth Edwin Horgen was born February 8, 1920 near Osage, the son of Edwin and Olga (Lundens) Horgen. He was baptized at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Osage and after instruction in the Christian faith was confirmed at the same church by the Reverend T.P. Solem.
As a young man he moved to the St. Ansgar vicinity with his family. On December 26, 1941 he was united in marriage with Leona Erdman by the Reverend Paul Brammer. They established their home on a farm northwest of St. Ansgar, later moving to a farm south of St. Ansgar where he died June 11 at the age of 39 years, four months and three days.
Mr. Horgen was preceded in death by his mother and an infant sister.
Survivors include his wife, eight children, his father, two brothers and one sister; also nieces and nephews and many friends.
Burial was in the Immanuel Cemetery with Reverend Wuerffel in charge of the committal services.
