ST. ANSGAR, IOWA - William J. Groth, 75, formerly of St. Ansgar, died Wednesday (January
8, 1997) at the Clarinda Treatment Complex, Clarinda, Iowa.Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the First Lutheran Church, St. Ansgar, with the Rev. Robert Porisch officiating. Burial will be in the First Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will begin after 12 p.m. Saturday at the First Lutheran Church.
William J. Groth was born Nov. 15, 1921, in St. Ansgar, the son of William and Irene (Dahl) Groth. He attended school in St. Ansgar and graduated from high school in 1939.
He is survived by nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, and one brother.
Schroeder and Sites Funeral Home, St. Ansgar, is in charge of arrangements.

#2:William Jacob Groth, the son of William August (August Wilhelm) and Irene Cora Helmina Dahl Groth was born November 15, 1921 in St. Ansgar, Iowa. He was baptized into the Christian faith on December 18, 1921 in First Lutheran Church, St. Ansgar, Iowa, when Pastor M.E. Waldeland served the congregation. His sponsors were Christina and Halvor Knutson Dahl (his mother's parents), Jacob A. Groth and Miss Clara Groth. He confirmed his baptismal faith on May 9, 1937 when Pastor Olaf A. Langehough served the congregation.
William (Bill) attended school in St. Ansgar and graduated from St. Ansgar High School in 1939. He continued his education at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota. He was forced to discontinue his education after he fell ill to schizophrenia. Bill spent the rest of his life in various institutions in Iowa. His last days were lived at the state of Iowa's Clarinda Treatment Complex in Clarinda, Iowa.
Bill died at Clarinda on January 8, 1997 at the age of seventy five years, one month and twenty three days.
Bill was a gifted musician and pianist. He was a life long member of First Lutheran Church where, in his younger years, he taught Sunday School and used his musical ability in our worship services.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Mrs. Marilyn Wilkerson and one brother, Homer. He is survived by nieces, nephews and cousins.
