ST. ANSGAR, IOWA — Eugene M. Hofland, 93, of St. Ansgar died on Monday (Sept. 19, 2005) at the Good Samaritan Center in St. Ansgar.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home, 207 S. School St. in St. Ansgar, with the Rev. Lance Kittleson officiating. Burial will be in the family lot in Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Mona, Iowa.
Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the funeral home.
Eugene Marvin Hofland was born Jan. 28, 1912, in Union Township, Mitchell County, Iowa, the son of Elling and Gretrude (Engeseter) Hofland. He was baptized and confirmed in the Six Mile Grove Lutheran Church.
Eugene lived with his widowed brother, Alfred, on the home farm until 1964, they then moved to their present home north of Toeterville.
Mr. Hofland was inducted into the U.S. Army in World War II on March 22, 1941. He received the Bronze Star and Purple Heart for wounds received in Casino, Italy, and the Middle East. He was a heavy mortar crewman, serving in Company D of the 29th Army Infantry Battalion. Eugene was discharged on Dec. 5, 1944.
Eugene was employed by Geo. A. Hormel & Co. for 40 years, from September of 1934 to September of 1974. He was also known for his beautiful garden and apples, and was known for sharing with others.
Mr. Hofland was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Alfred, Sidney and Oscar; and two sisters, Martha (Mrs. Ervin Schultze) and Ella (Mrs. Ervin Dieterich); one nephew, and one niece.
Survivors include two nieces, Arlene Anderson of St. Ansgar, and Erma Hanson of Northwood; and one nephew, Allen Hofland of St. Ansgar.
