BORN IN OSAGE

CLEAR LAKE, IOWA — James "Jim" Roy Hovelson, 69, of Clear Lake passed away Friday (May 6, 2005) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Zion Lutheran Church, 112 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake, with lay assistant Richard L. Scott of Zion Lutheran Church officiating. Interment will be at the Clear Lake Cemetery with military rites by the Clear Lake VFW.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St. Clear Lake.

Memorials may be made to the James Roy Hovelson Memorial Fund.

Jim was born on March 19, 1936, in Osage, Iowa, the son of Millard and Vida (Larson) Hovelson. When Jim was four years old, the family moved from Osage to Clear Lake, where he attended school.

In 1948, he moved with his family to Decorah, where he attended school and was confirmed in the Lutheran Church in Decorah. Moving back to Clear Lake, he graduated from the Clear Lake High School in 1955, then attended Mason City Junior College (now NIACC) one year before enlisting in the Army. He spent 18 months in Korea and one year in Fort Huachuca, Ariz., after which he returned to Mason City Junior College and continued his education, graduating with his associate of arts degree in accounting.

In 1961, he married Judy Cooling. Two children were born to them, Lisa Marie and Ann Katheryn.

Jim was first employed at the Park Clinic in Mason City as business manager, and later moved to Belmond in 1968, where he was the hospital administrator for 20 years at the Belmond Community Hospital. While in Belmond, he was Chairman of the Wright County Nurses Advisory Committee, served on the Wright County Compensation Board, was involved with the Belmond EMT Ambulance Service, was a member of the Belmond Jaycees, Belmond Country Club and Trinity Lutheran Church.

Jim married Valera (Rooks) Coyier in April 16, 1994, at the Guardian Angel Roadside Chapel, Clear Lake.

He later worked as a real estate agent in Clear Lake and also worked at the Heartland Inn in Clear Lake. He was a member of the Clear Lake VFW, Zion Lutheran Church, and Zion Lutheran's Church Elderberries.

Jim is survived by his wife, Valera, Clear Lake; two daughters: Lisa (Neal) Nelson, Belmond, and Ann (2nd Lt. Christopher) Brown, Ft. Benning, Ga.; a step-daughter, Dawn (Jody) Brosdahl, Thornton; five grandchildren: Kyle and Katie Nelson, and Taylor, Tess and Tatum Brown; and two step-grandchildren: Tad and Trent Brosdahl.He is also survived by his mother, Vida Hovelson, Clear Lake; two sisters: Janet (Richard) Williams of Port Richey, Fla., and Jule (Richard) McCullough of Pine Island, Minn.; one brother, Eric (Mary) Hovelson, Clive; uncle, Lynn "Bud" Larson; aunt, Helen Potter; and many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

Jim was preceded in death by his father Millard, one stepson, Randy Coyier, and several aunts and uncles.
