OSAGE, IOWA — Madeline Agnes (Marley) Shovein, 85, of Paradise, Calif., and formerly of Osage and Riceville, died Wednesday (May 4, 2005) at Cypress Acres Convalescent Hospital, Paradise, Calif.
Madeline was born on Jan. 21, 1920, the daughter of Frank and Winnie (Fox) Marley in rural Riceville. She graduated from St. Mary's High School in New Haven, and Hamilton Business College in Mason City.
In 1944, she married John Shovein of Mason City. She supported her husband's career, moving across the country while raising their seven children. She and John retired to Osage, eventually relocating to Paradise, Calif., in 1993.
Madeline excelled at tournament and duplicate bridge play, was an accomplished quilter and crocheter, and enjoyed every kind of chocolate. Madeline is best remembered as a gentle, spiritual woman who loved her family and her faith.
A memorial Mass for Madeline and her husband, John, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 7, 2005, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage, Iowa, with the Rev. Mark Reasoner officiating. Inurnment will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery.
There will be a time for lunch and fellowship following the memorial Mass at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Osage.

Madeline is survived by seven children: Julia Shovein and husband, Horst Wolff, of Paradise, Calif., John Shovein of Orland, Calif., Jeffrey Shovein of Scappoose, Ore., Joel Shovein of Winona, Minn., Janine Shovein and husband, Michael Holmes, of Shakopee, Minn., James Shovein and wife, Cindy, of Savage, Minn., and Jennifer Stringer of Paradise, Calif.; grandchildren: Julian and Brendan Wolff, Jake Shovein, Ian and Anna Holmes, Jake Kraemer, and Riley, Keefer and Madeline Stringer; four sisters: Marian Stibal, Osage; Cassie (John) Kloberdanz, Osage; Luella Kloberdanz, Waterloo, and Sister Anne Marley, Phoenix, Ariz.; two brothers: Gene (LaVonne) Marley, Waterloo, and Dave (Jan) Marley, Riceville, and also a large extended family.
She was preceded in death by parents, husband, and a daughter-in-law, Silvia (Palacios) Shovein.
