OSAGE, IOWA — Alice Ferne Hockens, 92, of Osage, died Monday (April 26, 2004) at Faith Lutheran Home in Osage.

Ferne was born on April 22, 1912, near Perry, Iowa, the daughter of Earl and Minne E. (Harrold) Crannell. She graduated from Perry High School. Ferne received her teaching certificate from Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, and later her bachelor of arts degree from Upper Iowa University. She taught in the Little Cedar Consolidated Schools and later at Pella, Iowa. During World War II, she moved to California, where she worked at a Lockheed aircraft plant.

Following World War II, Ferne was united in marriage to Charles F. Hockens on November 22, 1945, in Phoenix, Arizona. They returned to Little Cedar, where they engaged in farming, and where Ferne resumed her teaching career in the Riceville school system.

Music was very important to Ferne. She was involved with the Mitchell County Chorus, church choir, was an organist, and gave piano lessons. She was a member of the Cedar Valley Retired School Personnel.

Funeral service will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Little Cedar United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Jay Amundson officiating. Interment will be in the Little Cedar Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage, and one hour before the service on Thursday at the church.

She is survived by one son, Wendell Hockens and his wife, Gala, of Omaha, Neb., and their children, Michael Hockens and Pamela (Nathan) Marticke; one daughter, Judy Wilkes and her husband, Milo, of Riceville, and their children, Teresa and fiance, Drew Larson, and David (Julie) Wilkes; five great-grandchildren,

She was preceded by her parents; her husband, Charles Hockens in 1997; and one sister, Ruth Edwards.
