GREENE, IOWA — A funeral Mass for Edward J. Roskup, 75, of 111 N. Fifth St., Greene, will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with Monsignor Walter Brunkan officiating.

Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery with military rites conducted by Tack Barnett Post 268 American Legion of Greene.

Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today at Reid’s Funeral Chapel in Greene, where there will be a Scriptural wake service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services on Saturday at the church.

Edward John Roskup was born Aug. 23, 1928, at St. Ansgar, Iowa, a son of Joseph and Pauline (Winter) Roskup, and died Wednesday (Jan. 28, 2004) at his home in Greene under the care of Hospice of North Iowa. He spent his early childhood in St. Ansgar until the family moved to Iowa City, where he attended and graduated from St. Patrick’s School.

He was first employed as a waiter at the University Hospital. On May 3, 1946, he was inducted into the United States Army, where he served as a guard with Company L 15th Infantry in Berlin, Germany. He was honorably discharged on Oct. 28, 1947. Following his discharge he was employed for the University Laundry.

In 1950, he became employed as a bus driver for Iowa City Coach Co. and later Iowa City Transit, from which he retired with more than 39 years of service.

He received many awards for safe driving and years of performance. He was also honored for lifesaving by Gov. Robert D. Ray.

On June 30, 1956, he was united in marriage to Twyla Marie Losee at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Iowa City. They made their home at 1308 E. Bloomington in Iowa City for 26 years before moving to Greene in September 1991. Ed and Twyla were faith-ful members of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Greene. Twyla died on Oct. 23, 1998.

Ed will be remembered as an avid walker, often times walking up to eight miles a day. He enjoyed fishing, eating ice cream and spending time with his grandchildren.

He will be sadly missed by his daughter, Teresa Marie Van Orden of Greene; one son, Edward Roskup Jr. and his wife, Margaret, of Wellman; three grandchildren, Edward J. “E.J.” Roskup III of Wellman, Billy Van Orden of Greene and Karitta Rae Van Orden of Mason City; his twin sister, Rosemary Dahnke of Iowa City, and a brother, Jake (Phyllis) Roskup of Iowa City.

Ed was also preceded in death by his parents, four sisters: Paulina Roskup, Katherine Davis, Pauline Coder and Mary Oesterricher, and three brothers, Andrew, Peter and Joseph Roskup.
