OSAGE, IOWA — Charles R. “Charlie” Hungerford, age 79, of Osage died Sunday, (March 30, 2003) at the Mitchell County Regional Health Care Center Hospice Unit in Osage.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m.Tuesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage, with the Rev. Philip Recker officiating.
Interment will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery in Osage with a military graveside service conducted by Osage American Legion Post #641.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage, where there will be a rosary at 4:30 p.m. and a Scripture service at 7:30 p.m.
Charles was born March 5, 1924, in Osage, the son of Roy and Mary (Schloff) Hungerford. He graduated from Osage High School in 1941. Charlie served with the U.S. Marines in the South Pacific during World War II. After his medical discharge from the Marines in 1943, Charlie attended Iowa State University in Ames. Later he graduated from Dunwoody Institute in Minneapolis, Minn.
Charlie was united in marriage to Neva Fuhrman on February 14, 1952, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage. They made their home in Osage. He was a postal carrier in Osage for 28 years, retiring in 1979.
He enjoyed farming, riding his Harley-Davidson motorcycle, fishing and being with his children and grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, Neva Hungerford, of Osage; three sons, Tim Hungerford and friend, Lisa, of Coon Rapids, Minn., Mark Hungerford and his wife, Cyndi, of West Burlington, Iowa, Todd Hungerford and his wife, Tina, of Sierra Vista, Ariz.; two daughters, Ann Kienzle and friend, Philip, of Riceville, Mary Mackelprang of Tucson, Ariz.; brother, Jim Hungerford and his wife, Wilma, of Osage; sister, Betty DeMar of Bloomington, Minn.; six grandchildren, Jennifer, Nikki, Jared, and Gavin Hungerford, Shane and Samantha Mackelprang; two step-grandchildren, Travis and Mandy Dodd.
Charlie was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Jean Hungerford.
