Esther V. Abbott, age 96, of St. Ansgar, Mitchell county, Iowa, died on Sunday, January 6, 2002, at the Stacyville Community Nursing Home.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Firt Lutheran Church, St. Ansgar, with the Rev. Robert Porisch officiating. Burial will be on Friday in the Paynesville Cemetery, Paynesville, Minnesota.

Esther Vivian Hendrickson was born on the family farm west of St. Ansgar on July 20, 1905. She was the daughter of Henry O. and Elizabeth (Satre) Hendrickson. She was baptized and confirmed at First Lutheran Church by the Rev. Waldeland. She attended the St. Ansgar schools and graduated in June 1923. She graduated in June 1923. She graduated from St. Olaf College, Northfield, Minnesota, with a bachelor of arts degree in June 1927. She continued her education by attending summer sessions at the University of Minnesota and taught several years in Minnesota schools.

On July 20, 1944, she married Mark M. Abbott of International Falls, Minnesota. The Rev. Olaf Langehough performed the ceremony at First Lutheran Church in St. Ansgar She continued to live in International Falls where she was a member of Zion Lutheran Church. She was active in both church and civic affairs. After her husband's death in 1972, she moved to St. Ansgar to make her home with her brother Otto.

She was preceded in death by her husband Mark; by her parents, and by brothers, Otto, Morris and Roy.

Esther is survived by nieces, Jean (Mrs. Sam Edgar) of St. Louis, Missouri, Mary (Mrs. Tom Cederlund) of Grantham, N.H.; nephews Don Hendrickson and wife, Leanna of St. Ansgar, David Hendrickson and wife Mary Jo of Keokuk, and Bartlett Hendrickson and wife Frances of Rockville, Maryland; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.

ST. ANSGAR - Esther V. Abbott, 96, of St. Ansgar, died Sunday (Jan. 6, 2002) at the Stacyville Community Nursing Home.

Visitation will be held one hour before the service on Thursday at the church.
