Nelda Lenore Hardy, age 82, of Osage, Mitchell county, Iowa, died Thursday, December 18, 2008, at the Faith Home in Osage. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, December 22, 2008, at the Sacred Heart Oratory in Meyer, with Rev. John Moser officiating. Burial will be at St. Francis Catholic Cemetery in Belmond. Visitation will be from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. Sunday at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage. Visitation will continue one hour before services at the church.
Nelda was born May 11, 1926, at Belmond, Iowa, the daughter of Frederick and Georgia (Frohling) Fulton. She attended Belmond Public Schools, and was a member of the National Champion Marching Band in 1942. The band marched at many events, including the Drake Relays and North Iowa Band Festival. The band also won awards as a concert band.
Following her graduation from Belmond High School in 1944, she worked for Tomco Seeds in Belmond. On February 17, 1947, she married Irwin Hardy at the St Francis Xavier Rectory in Belmond. This union was blessed with four loving children: Charlotte, Frederick, Leslie, and Molly Jo. In 1951, the family moved from Belmond to Mason City, where her husband worked for Armour & Company as a hog buyer. In the spring of 1964, they moved to a farm near Stacyville. In 1981, Nelda and Irwin moved to Osage, where they remained until her death.
Nelda enjoyed her children and grandchildren, as well as crafts and shopping, until she was unable to get around. She was a member of the Meyer Sacred Heart Guild and worked on many charity drives.
Nelda is survived by her husband, Irwin Hardy of Osage; her children, Charlotte (Roland) Lusk of St. Ignatius, Montana, Frederick (Paula) Hardy of Stacyville, Leslie (Sara) Hardy of Orchard, Molly Jo (Karl) Jensen of Mitchell; grandchildren, Mollie Lusk (Robert) Callahan, Sarah Lusk, Susan Hardy, Wesley Hardy, Rachel Hardy, and Daniel Hardy; great-grandson, Isaac Robert Callahan; sisters-in-law, Etta Dahlgren of Stone Mountain, Georgia, Shirley Fulton of Belmond; brother-in-law, Charles (Betty) Wilmarth of Belmond; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Ruth Wilmarth; and a brother, Jack Fulton.
