One by one the old settlers are called from our midst, some after years of pain and sufferings, and others like a passing shadow without note of warning or word of farewell, and the place which has known them so long sees them no more.

Peter Hanson, who has been ill for a number of years, passed away at his home, Saturday afternoon. During the past two weeks his death has been almost hourly expected, and many times the watchers thought the final call had come.

He was one of the oldest businessmen in Lyle until he disposed of his harness shop last spring. Here he toiled for 38 years, during which time he saw many come and go in business circles, and countless other changes take place; here he met successes and adversities, joys, and cares. He was interested in the cause of temperance and religion and the upbuilding of the village, and was at one time owner of considerable property.

Peter Hanson was born in Welch, Denmark, June 7th, 1840, and when a boy learned the harness-makers trade, which occupation he followed while in the old country. In 1868 he was married to Mary Sorenson, and the year following left his native land for America, and settled for a short time in Freeborn County, with the Peter Knutson family. Later he moved to Cedar Falls, Iowa, where he was first employed in a harness shop, and later became a partner in the business.

In 1874, he sold out and came to Lyle, where he opened a harness shop, and with the exception of about a year continued in the business until last spring, when he was compelled to give up on account of his health.

In the spring of 1878, his wife died, and of the four children born to them, only Mrs. G. Hackett of Waterloo, and Mrs. Jas. Mortenson, survive.

In 1880 he was married to Anna Rasmusson, who, with the four children born to them, remain to mourn his departure. The children are Will of Mason City, Mrs. Florence Snyder of Omaha, and Robert and Mary at home.

Deceased was a charter member of the local camp of M.W. of A., and carried protection for his family in that order.

The funeral was held Tuesday afternoon at the Mission church and was conducted by Rev. Samuel Johnson, pastor of the Congregational church, and Peter Knutson of Clear Lake, Iowa. Interment was made in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Mona.
