Funeral services were held Monday at Our Savior's Lutheran church for a prominent Osage resident, Hartley L. Penney, 78, who died Saturday at Mitchell Co. Memorial hospital. Mr. Penney was admitted to the hospital two weeks prior to his death, having suffered a heart attack. He was stricken with a continuing series of attacks until his death.

The Rev. Obert Hoven, church pastor, was in charge of the services. Arrangements by C.R. Champion & Sons. Burial in the Osage Cemetery.

Hartley Lee Penney was born November 23, 1886, at Stacyville, the son of Samuel & Anna Taylor Penney. He was baptized in the Methodist church and received his education in Stacyville and Osage schools. He also completed two years at Cedar Valley seminary.

He became affiliated with the produce business in Omaha, and there enlisted in the army in World War I, serving until the armistice was signed. In 1919, he returned to Osage and purchased a tire repair business. He & his brother Earl, formed a business partnership on January 1, 1920, in the sale of automobile wholesale parts and tire repair. They operated this firm for 43 years.

His marriage to Mabel Caroline Larson took place at Mona Lutheran church, June 14, 1928, after which he became a member of Our Savior's Lutheran church, Osage, Iowa.

He was a member of American Legion post 278, Masonic lodge No. 102, AF and AM, served on the Osage school board, and was active in other affairs of his church and community.

Mr. Penney was preceded in death by his parents and an infant son, David Lee.

Surviving are his wife, Mabel, two children: Mrs. Carl Bowman, Ann Marie, of Kingman, Arizona; and Richard Lee Penney of Baltimore, Md. He also leaves six grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Ralph Owen, Clara, of Inglewood, California; and two brothers: Dr. Maurice Penney of Laguna Hills, Calif. and Earl Penney of Osage, Iowa.
