ACCIDENTAL DEATH

Gotthard M. Weinrebe, of this city, came to his death by falling down the cellar stairs, last Thursday afternoon, at the home of his son H. M. Weinrebe, in this city, with whom he had resided since 1887. He started down the cellar stairs and before reaching the landing, in some manner made a mistep, falling with great force.

His son hearing him fall rushed to his rescue, finding hime prone upon his back,in an unconsious condition from which he did not rally. Medical aid was promptly summoned, but he was beyond assistance, expiring in about 30 minutes afer the accident. His extreme age and feeble condition were responsible for his death.

The deceased was one of the band of pioneers who came to this county in the early days, enduring privations and toils, only experienced by those who sought a home in the western wilds of the '50s.

He was born in Germany, and in 1849 settled in Cook county, Illiois, removing to Osage in 1855.
He was the first blacksmith, having a shop near where the livery barn of Ben Hart's stands, moving it afterwards to a point near the residence of Peter Lohr. In 1858 he moved on to the farm across the Cedar river from Pierce's carrying on farming until 1887, when he made his home with his son Herman, they moving to Osage in 1892. His wife died in 1888. His health had been fairly good, though enfeebled by the weight of years. His age was 82 years, 5 months and 1 day.

The deceased had always lived an industrious and exemplary life was a good citizen, quiet and unassuming, enjoying the confidence and esteem of all who knew him. He leaves one son and one grandchild. The funeral was held at his late home, conducted by Rev. Stephan, interment taking place in the Osage cemetery.
