Dean Penney, 23, Fatally Injured By Lightning
[August 29, 1962]Dean Penney, age 23, of Osage, Mitchell County, Iowa, was fatally injured last Wednesday, Ausust 29, 1962, when struck by lightning in the heavy rains. Penney was returning from the field, driving a tractor, when the accident occurred, about 4:15 p.m. two miles north and four miles west of Osage.
The tractor went off the road and overturned in the ditch. Penney was pinned under the tractor. He had been working on the Lawrence Ask farm since Monday. Penney was found by Mr. Ask about an hour after the accident occurred.
Funeral services were held on Saturday at the Methodist church in Osage. The C.R. Champion and Sons funeral home was in charge of arrangements, and burial was in the Osage Cemetery.
Dean Edward Penney was born in Iowa City, Johnson county, Iowa, January 30, 1939. He came to live at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Penney when he was three and one-half years old. He received his education in the public schools of Osage and became a member of the Methodist church.
He joined the air force in 1957 serving three years, part of which was in Morocco.
He married Joan Markham of Osage on June 24, 1961. He had been employed at his family's business, Penney Bros. Co., in Osage; and later at the Lawrence Ask Farm where he was occupied at the time of his death.
Survivors include his parents, Earl and Evabel Penney of Osage, his wife Joan, one daughter, Lynn Marie, one brother, Stephen Gregg of Minneapolis, and one full sister, Mrs. Murray Kline of Winterset.
