Shirley Hackenmiller, 73, of St. Ansgar, Mitchell county, Iowa, died on Friday, November 2, 2007, peacefully, surrounded by her family, in Rochester, Minnesota.

Shirley L. Mayer was born on January 1, 1934, in Stacyville, Iowa, to Herb and Agnes (Goergen) Mayer. She graduated from Visitation School in 1952.

She married Ernest Hackenmiller on June 22, 1955 at Visitation Catholic Church in Stacyville, and they were blessed with eight children. They farmed in the Stacyville area and moved to St. Ansgar in 1997. She was a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters, American Legion Auxiliary, Southwest Country Circle, and the Rosary Society. Shirley was a courageous woman battling breast and kidney cancer.

She is survived by her husband, Ernie; by her children: Randy and Nancy of Stacyville, Wanda of Cedar Falls, Brenda of Cedar Falls, John and Sue of Burlington, Mic of Elk Run Heights, Audrey and Terry Milks of Robins, Denise and Jeff of Monona; by her grandchildren: Molly, Joe and Maria, Tyler, Rachel, Claire, Cassandra, Trey, Cameron, Kylie, and Dylan; by great-grandchildren: Kimberly, Kenya, and Joey; by sisters Donna (Cliff) Mueske, Janice (Melvin) Hackenmiller; and by a brother, John (Darlene) Mayer.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Herb and Agnes, and by her daughter Deb.

A mass of Christian Burial was held on Wednesday, November 7, 2007, at Visitation Catholic Church, Stacyville, Iowa, with Monsignor John Hemann officiating. Burial will be in the Visitation Cemetery, Stacyville. Visitation was held on Tuesday, November 6, from 4-8 p.m. at the Visitation Catholic Church, with a rosary at 4:30 p.m. and a scripture service at 7 p.m.
